Our process ensures we create a strategy that applies to your unique situation and goals.

We have designed this process to give you (and us) a framework for making an educated and informed decision about working together and achieving your goals.  

Step 1 - The  Phone Call

We start with a 15-minute introductory phone call to help us both make sure that our expertise matches your situation.

Step 2 – Financial Road Map

At your first in person meeting, you and your spouse will complete your Financial Road Map.  This will help make sure we understand your situation, your values, goals and concerns.  We will also collect your financial documents to make sure we fully understand the financial aspects of your situation and this will allow us to complete our analysis.

Step 3 - Analysis & Plan

Here we apply our expertise to answer questions such as

  • Can you afford to retire?
  • Are you paying too much tax?
  • Can you eliminate or reduce any threats to my retirement?
  • Can my portfolio be improved?

Step 4 - The Implementation Meeting

During this meeting, we explain exactly what you need to do to achieve your goals, including answers to the questions mentioned above. 

One of the keys to this part of the process is that we do not give you a 100-page plan and expect you to understand it.  We give you the exact steps you need to take on 1 or 2 easy to understand pages.  You do not have to understand all the numbers, that is what we are here for.

Step 5 - Ongoing Advice

This is a process, not a one time event.

Once you become a client, we will meet on a regular basis to update your plan, provide course corrections as needed and help you plan for any new goals or obstacles along the way. These meetings will give you the confidence to continue living life on purpose.

Growing up in a small town with a very supportive family, close relationships have always been important to Joe. This is something that easily translates to the way he does business. Joe focuses on building strong relationships with his clients. Joe went to University in Buffalo, where he played on the varsity hockey team and studied Business Administration. This taught him the importance of both hard work and team work. Both of which have become an important aspect of the way we run our business, recognizing that it takes a team to deliver the best client service experience.

Aside from hockey, Joe enjoys being active in the community and playing sports, especially golf and baseball. He also enjoys coaching and helping out with minor hockey, spending time with friends and family and doing as much travelling as possible with his wife Ashley and two sons Louis & Harry.

Joe is passionate about his career in the Financial Planning business. Joe started working in his dad’s office in 2010, he obtained his Life Insurance and Mutual Funds licences in 2011 and has since achieved his CFP (Certified Financial Planner, professional) and CHS (Certified Health Specialist) designations. Both of which have helped in to gain an advanced knowledge in Financial Planning for his clients. Like in sports, where the best teams have the best defence, Joe believes the best financial plans build a solid financial defence for their families and their business.

Randall’s parent both came from humble beginnings, growing up with big families in rural Ontario during the Great Depression. From these humble beginnings they were able to raise and educate two children, own a home and cottage, retire at 60 and live comfortably the rest of their lives leaving a legacy for their family.

From his parents, Randall learned the importance of living within your means as well as implementing and embracing a disciplined financial plan in order to achieve financial security and peace of mind. The values of honesty, integrity, work ethic and discipline, the he learned from his parents, fuels the passion that runs this financial planning business.

Randall was born and raised in Peterborough, he also earned his degree at Trent University. Upon graduation he spend time travelling in Europe, before moving to and working in Edmonton. He joined North American Life in 1978 and it was there that he learned the fundamentals of the financial planning business.

Randall earned his Chartered Life Underwriting (CLU) designation in 1985, which recognizes an advanced understanding of insurance law, taxation, financial and estate planning. In 1985 he became President of Matthews & Associates Insurance and Investment Services, which at the time was a subsidiary of Matthews & Associates Insurance Brokers. Randall Had a staff of 5 full-time employees and they focused on Corporate Life Insurance needs.

In 2002 Randall bought out Matthews & Associates Insurance & Investment Services and in 2004 purchased the building we are currently located in at 478 Downie St., Peterborough. The business has since focused on financial and retirement planning for pre-retirees, retirees and business owners which, fits well with the demographics of Peterborough.

Karen joined Matthews & Associates Insurance & Investment Services Ltd. in 1996. She manages the day to day operations of our group benefit business, life insurance, critical illness, disability and individual healthcare business. 

She spent the first part of her career working for Granada Canada managing client accounts and then moved to the “Office of the Employer Advisor” with the ministry of labour.

Karen was raised in Peterborough and attended Trent University and Sir Sandford Fleming College. She is an avid crafter, hockey/lacrosse fan and former horse racing owner. When not at work, she can be found in her garden, crafting new ideas, reading or knitting for children’s hospital.
